All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi (AIIMS) is a public hospital and medical research university located in New Delhi, India. Established in 1956 under the AIIMS Act, it functions autonomously under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Recognized as an institution of national importance by an Act of Parliament, AIIMS was founded with the objective of developing exemplary patterns of medical education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It aims to set high standards in teaching, research, and patient care, while also bringing together world-class educational facilities in one place, with the authority to award its own degrees.
The idea of AIIMS was first proposed in 1946 by the Health Survey and Development Committee of the Government of India. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru initially suggested setting it up in Kolkata, but after West Bengal’s Chief Minister Bidhan Chandra Roy’s refusal, it was established in New Delhi. Nehru, supported by Health Minister Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, envisioned AIIMS as a “temple of modern India” that would lead medical education and research in Southeast Asia. The Bhore Committee had already recommended creating a National Medical Centre to train highly qualified healthcare professionals. Their vision gained international support, and a grant from New Zealand under the Colombo Plan enabled the foundation stone to be laid in 1952. Finally, in 1956, AIIMS was established as an autonomous institution through an Act of Parliament, dedicated to excellence in healthcare, teaching, and research.
